Role
Commissioning Engineer – Defence Sector
We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to support and deliver complex commissioning activities within the defence sector. This role ensures commissioning activities meet all applicable national legal requirements, technical specifications, and applied standards, while providing commissionability input throughout concept, detailed design, and construction phases.
This is an appointed role under internal governance procedures and requires formal appointment as a Risk Assessor.
The Role
As Commissioning Engineer, you will support the development and delivery of the commissioning strategy and act as a key interface between engineering teams and sub-contractors. You will ensure commissioning activities are delivered safely, compliantly, and to the required technical and quality standards in a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities

Support the development and implementation of the Commissioning Strategy.

Act as a focal point for internal teams and sub-contractors during commissioning activities.

Ensure commissioning works are planned, risk assessed, and managed in line with company and regulatory requirements.

Contribute to maintaining high standards of health, safety, wellbeing, and inclusion.

Assist in organising resources to deliver the contracted commissioning scope.

Oversee and execute commissioning activities to ensure delivery right first time.

Prepare and review Safe Systems of Work (Risk Assessments, Method Statements, etc.).

Monitor and coordinate sub-contractors where applicable.

Review training and competency records to ensure personnel are suitably qualified.

Provide reports and performance data relating to Safety, Quality, Time, and Cost.

Carry out workplace inspections and ensure compliance with procedures and standards.

Report incidents and unplanned events in line with company processes.
Experience & Qualifications
Minimum Academic Requirements:

NVQ Level 4 / HNC / HND / SVQ Level 3 (with relevant experience)
or -
Vocational Qualification Level 6 / Bachelor’s Degree / SVQ Level 4

Membership of an appropriate Engineering Institution
Essential Certification:

IOSH Managing Safely
Experience Required:
-
Demonstrable experience delivering commissioning activities within a highly regulated environment (defence or similar sectors such as nuclear).

Strong understanding of safety governance, risk assessment, and quality standards.

Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors.
